Good to Know

Insurance FAQs

Can foreigners buy insurance in Thailand?

Yes. Thai insurers offer health, accident, home, condo, motor, travel and life cover to foreign residents and visitors. Age limits and documents vary by insurer, so we match you with companies that accept your profile.

What is the difference between IPD and OPD?

Inpatient (IPD) covers treatment when you are admitted to hospital, such as surgery and overnight stays. Outpatient (OPD) covers visits where you go home the same day, such as consultations and prescriptions. Most people start with IPD and add OPD if their budget allows.

Do I need health insurance for my Thai visa?

It depends on the visa. Retirement (Non-O-A) and LTR visas require proof of health insurance meeting immigration's minimum cover; other visas may not. Requirements change, so we confirm the current rules before you buy.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Usually not at first. Most insurers exclude conditions you already have, or cover them only after a waiting period or for an extra premium. Always declare your medical history honestly — non-disclosure can lead to claims being refused.

Is motor insurance compulsory in Thailand?

Yes. Every car and motorbike must carry Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI, known as Por Ror Bor), which covers injury to people but not damage to vehicles. Voluntary cover — Class 1, 2+, 3+, 2 or 3 — protects your own vehicle and third-party property.

Does my condo's building insurance cover my belongings?

Generally no. The condo's juristic person insures the building structure and common areas. Your furniture, electronics, fixtures and liability inside your unit need your own condo contents policy.
